Reading Assessment 1 - Questions

1-The author's thesis is to make us understand the different principles of describing a photograph, and how  important it is. Make the readers understand the meaning of subject and subject matter, style, medium, and form when analysis a picture.

2- He uses a lot of photographers such a Richard Avedon, William Wilson, Joel -Peter Witkin as examples. He show us the different critics and analysis that have been made on their work.

3- a: Description: asking myself what I am looking at in this specific image, and getting to know the image, then it will lead to understanding and perhaps appreciate it more.

b: Subject is the overall theme of the picture, and subject matter is what we directly see, a place, an event, or someone.

c: Form : how the artist choose to represent the subject matter in his photograph.

d: Medium: what the "art form" or the main subject is made of, what express meaning.

e: Style: what the photographer chooses to shot, and how he does it, how he uses medium and form. What makes him different from other artists.

4. a: What the author means by compare and contrats is that it's the best way to analyse someone's work.
b:  To rely on different sources such as knowledge of photography, interviews of the artist, press releases etc.. to be able to compare someone's earlier work with his present work for example.

5. a: Description and interpretation both work together, as the author explains, they have a circular relationship. It's impossible to describe without interpreting.

b: Barrett uses Joel Peter Witkin as a perfect example of someone that has had many positive and negative critic about his work, but the author tells us that each of their critics influence their description of his work.

6. I think a point the author was making was that we all have our own interpretations and different visions of what we like and don't like, but critics is the best for every artists to grow and evolve in their work.  There are many things I learned in this chapter, the different steps to describe and understand a picture, and the way we must look at photographs: "pictures are human constructs".
The author concludes his chapter, by citing all the different points that must be used when describing a photograph.
