Assignment 5: Exhibition Review

The exhibition I went to is called "The city (and a few lonely people)",  the gallery exposed different photographers (such as Diane Arbus, Larry Clark, Clarissa Binet , John Arsenault, Jen Davis, Nan Goldin, Jack Pierson).  The theme was any city and loneliness. All the pictures presented showed either different cities such as Shanghai, New York or Los Angeles. The first picture I looked at was a picture of the Flat Iron. The building was centered in the photograph and the streets around it were completely empty, no people, no cars, no one: as if it was an abandoned place. Next to this photograph, there was two similar pictures. Both very dark and showing a man walking in the middle of a street, probably New York too. The pictures were edited in a way that only showed the man's shadow which created a mysterious and dark atmosphere and also let them be the only subject in the picture. I think that these street photographs really demonstrate loneliness. The Flat Iron picture gave me an immediate feeling of sadness, because it's a place always crowded with people, and happy looking tourists and I never would have thought of this place being empty of people and cars. The two pictures of the shadow's man were also perfectly accurate to me. In the first one, the man is walking alone in the middle of very tall buildings that surrounds him, just as if he was in an abandoned city too. And the picture next to it, showed the man with the light coming from behind him, which created an enormous shadow of his body, just as if it was only him and his shadow, a beautiful metaphor showing us that he is left alone with himself. The other photographs shown were pictures of people. The first one I saw was a picture of a man, the picture was cropped in a way that only showed us a part of his head and his neck, on which he had a tattoo saying "lonely". Another picture of "people" I saw, was one that showed an old lady smiling or laughing, while laying on a bed with a cake in front of her. The image of the man was in color, with only some sunlight on his neck to empathize on the tattoo. The picture of the woman in her bed was in black and white, with low lighting which created an ancient but also sad atmosphere.
The image that stood up the most to me was one I saw at the end. It showed a tall building, all in white, with three people being in the center. One woman was facing the building, we can only see her hair and her purse. Next to her several feet away, a man just standing with a mallet then, next to him another woman that looked like she was walking into the building.  I liked this image because it was a perfect example of lines (the lines of the building going up), and repetition (the three people next to each other, and the continuous light fixtures on top of them). But this picture also has an interesting mood, the fact that the three people are positioned like that, creates an intriguing look. The fact that the man in the middle seemed lost between the two woman who seemed in a hurry and both looked like they didn't even notice him gave this perfect sense of loneliness.  All of the other photographs exposed were either empty streets or people by themselves, but this picture fits perfectly with the others because it mixes the two subjects perfectly, while still being in the exposition's theme. All of these details made me choose this picture.
I had a great time at this exposition, all of the pictures worked with the theme of the show. I think all of the photographers effectively expressed feelings of isolation, sadness, being hopeless but at the same time just feelings of peace. Because being loneliness doesn't necessarily means being lonely or sad being it can also represent being independent and at peace with yourself.
